The answer is no:

The driving narrative for the results of the November election has run contrary to that. According to a broad swath of popular understanding, Donald Trump will be the next president because he narrowly won three critical states Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin powered by working class voters frustrated with economic intransigence.

But thats not what exit polling shows in those states, to Southpaws point. Exit polls show Hillary Clinton winning a majority of the vote from people who told pollsters that the economy was the most important issue facing the country. Whats more, in each state, a majority of voters said that was the case.

In fact, if we extend that out to every state for which we have exit polling, in 22 of those 27 states a majority of people said that the economy was the most important issue. And in 20 of those states, voters who said so preferred Hillary Clinton. In 17, in fact, a majority of those voters backed Clinton.

In nearly every state, Clinton did better (and Trump worse) with voters worried about the economy than with the overall pool of voters. (Notice how the blue slices in the smaller circles extend further than the blue slices in the larger ones.)

How can that be? How can she win a majority of the majority and still lose? Because she lost with other groups worse.

The exit poll questionnaire gave voters a choice between four options for the most important issue. Clinton was generally preferred by those who said foreign policy was the most important issue, too, but Trump was preferred by those who saw immigration or terrorism as most important. The key is the margins. On average, about 13 percent of people in the 27 states said foreign policy was most important and they preferred Clinton by an average of 30 points. On average, voters who said the economy was most important preferred Clinton by 7.3. But on terrorism, rated most important by a fifth of voters, on average, Trump led by an average of 21.8 points. On immigration (most important to an average of 12.2 percent of respondents)? A huge 42.1 percentage point lead for Trump.

If Ive read Mark Lilla correctly, however, the fact that Trump voters were likely to prioritize immigration and terrorism in the wake of Trumps appeals to white resentment cannot be identity politics.

Anyway, the idea that Clinton was only different economic messaging away from winning is a nice story, but the evidence supporting the theory is notably scant.

A Florida congressional candidate apologized Tuesday for eyebrow-raising remarks to supporters that Hillary Clinton is under no illusions that you want to have sex with her, or that she's going to seduce you."

Democrat Joe Garcias candid comments were caught on camera by a so-called political tracker, The Miami Herald reported. Garcia was speaking at a Key West Democratic campaign office opening on Saturday.

I apologize for my poorly worded comment about Secretary Clinton, Garcia said in a Tuesday statement. My comments were intended to speak to Secretary Clintons relentless focus on getting the job done, despite the unjust gender stereotypes and biases women in public life are frequently subjected to. Hillary Clinton is the most competent and qualified presidential candidate in the history of this country, man or woman and I'm with her, because I'm confident she will be one of our countrys most effective leaders.

With Garcia in the stretch run of a tight race to win back his old congressional seat from vulnerable incumbent Rep. Carlos Curbelo, Florida Republicans pounced on the "sexist" remarks.

"It's shameful and disgusting that Joe Garcia would describe Hillary Clinton's qualifications to serve as president in terms of whether or not he would have sexual relations with her," National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Katie Martin said in a statement.

The Herald reported that the video was recorded upside down and shows Garcia standing in a hallway talking to a few other men before addressing the crowd. At one point, Garcia said Clintons potential presidency would be the most consequential presidency that weve seen since Lyndon Johnson.

Lyndon Johnson wasn't a particularly charming man, wasn't a particularly nice man: He would ask you nice, and then when you didn't do it, he made you do it, Garcia said. And Hillary is under no illusions that you want to have sex with her, or that she's going to seduce you, or out-think you.

Garcia later said: I dont want to be offensive to women. What Im talking about is exactly that: Its getting it done.

Asked why he would talk about supporters having sex with Clinton, Garcia at first defended his comments in a statement to The Herald.

"I believe Secretary Clinton is the most competent and qualified presidential candidate in the history of this country, man or woman," he said. "My comments speak to Secretary Clinton's focus on getting things done, and not on the gender stereotypes and biases women in public life are frequently subjected to. I fully support Hillary Clinton for president, and I'm confident she will be one of our country's most effective presidents."

Trump answers questions on Brexit, renewed talk of Texas secession push in US

Donald Trump splashed cold water Saturday on renewed calls by U.S. secessionists for Texas to break away from America in the wake of Britains vote to leave the European Union.

Texas will never do that, because Texas loves me, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee told reporters, while touring his golf resorts in Scotland.

So-called Texas nationalists, who for years have waged a quixotic campaign to secede, swiftly seized on Thursdays Brexit decision to demand a similar referendum, only on Texas independence. In the spirit of the vote, supporters like Texas Nationalist Movement leader Daniel Miller called for Texit -- a hashtag trending Friday on Twitter.

Daniel Miller (@TheTexianDM) June 24, 2016

However, even as Britains vote to leave the E.U. raises the prospect of similar referendums across Europe, the push for Texas or any other state to break away from the U.S. stands little chance of succeeding. While Trump says the U.K. vote exposed an anger in the electorate that will rear its head elsewhere, he indicated he does not think that extends to any secession movement inside the United States especially if hes in the White House.

Texas would never do that if Im president, Trump said, adding the same goes for Vermont when asked about a secessionist movement there.

Trumps comments mark a rebuke from the candidate who has drawn explicit parallels between the anti-establishment sentiments that fueled the Brexit decision and those fueling his campaign on this side of the pond.

The secessionists have long faced setbacks at every level of government.

The White House, in response to a petition, said three years ago that Texas simply cannot leave the union.

The state Republican Party took up this same issue at their convention just last month and defeated a bid to get a Texas independence measure in the party platform.

The Texas Tribune, in an analysis Friday, also said that while Texas could potentially split into separate states it could not legally secede. The Tribune quoted the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who once wrote in a letter, If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede.

Nevertheless, Miller issued a statement Friday urging Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to call a referendum.

The win for Brexit opens the door for Texit by establishing, concretely, that it is possible to have an adult conversation on independence and letting the people have the final say, he said.

After winning independence from Mexico in 1836, Texas was its own republic until 1845, when it joined the U.S. Secession advocates argue the second-most populous state in the country is burdened by the federal government and has a large-enough economy to survive on its own.

Chinese authorities have asked Apple to turn over source code twice in the past two years, but the company refused in both cases, Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell told a hearing of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Tuesday.

Sewell was defending the company against accusations that the company is willing to hand data over to the Chinese government for business reasons, but unwilling to help U.S. law enforcement access private data, Reuters reported. Today's hearing is related to a House Judiciary Committee gathering in March, where Sewell also spoke to defend Apple's encryption practices.

The company's dealings with China became contentious earlier in the hearing, when Captain Charles Cohen a commander with the Indiana State Police brought up the idea that Apple is willing to give data to Chinese officials. His position was attacked by Representative Anna Eshoo, a Democrat from California, who forced Cohen to admit that his only source of information was media reports.

In Apple's latest Report on Government Information Requests, released Monday, the company said that China filed 32 requests for information relating to 6,724 accounts, up from 24 requests tied to 85 accounts six months earlier. It's not clear how many of these Apple complied with.

In a separate Tuesday panel, also in front of the Energy and Commerce subcommittee, Sewell contended that building any backdoor into Apple products would create problems for "one hundred percent" of its users.

Calling attention to potential usefulness of accessing private data, however, Thomas Galati the chief of intelligence for the New York Police Department told the hearing that between October 2015 and March 2016, investigators had been unable to open 67 Apple devices. These were linked to 44 violent crimes, include 10 homicides, two rapes, and the shooting of an on-duty officer.

New York is now the focus of the conflict between Apple and the U.S. government over encryption, following the Justice Department withdrawing an order asking Apple to help break into the iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook. An anonymous third party helped the government instead.

The Justice Department is appealing a March ruling by New York Magistrate Judge James Orenstein, who argued that Apple can't be forced to undermine its own security in the instance of an iPhone linked to a local drug case. On Friday, lawyers for Apple suggested that the government has failed to prove it needs Apple's help in extracting data.

Facility Maintenance Companies will help you. You might thing that HVAC is a subject you really cannot master. But, spending time reading this piece makes it possible. This article will give you the advice you need.

Before calling someone to repair your system, make sure you know what kind of HVAC system you actually have. Know the brand model and name number. It is also helpful to have the maintenance history. This makes sure your contractor will be sufficiently prepared.

When a contractor gives you a list of references, be sure to make use of it. According to the promised timeline, call the people on the list and ask about the quality of the work, how closely they came to their quote and whether or not the work was completed.

Use plants to increase your air conditioner's effectiveness. An AC unit fully shaded by shrubbery and trees can operate up to 10 percent more efficiently. Do keep spacing in mind, however. Air flow must not be constricted, and technicians need room to work when they come out to service your unit.

Before you hire anyone to do any work on your HVAC, be sure to get a written estimate which has itemized costs listed on it. This will ensure that comparing one contractor to another will be simple as you can see what one offers that another doesn't, or what price they're charging for the same items.

Let your friends and family know about the discounts that are possible via ENERGY STAR. There's a lot of savings that can be had here, so why hold this good news all to yourself! You can save those closest to you hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.

Keep it dry if you want to ensure your air conditioner offers you great performance. If it is located in a dry, cool area, you'll find that the efficiency goes up and the unit lasts a long time. You can even buy a water vapor cooler to cool it as it is running.

If you can, use double-paned windows instead of single-paned ones. Having double pane windows allows your air conditioning unit to be run much less during the summer, because the cool air is kept inside the home. This also helps retain heated air during the colder months.

Use your HVAC system to heat your water for free! In the summer, residual heat pulled out of your house is used to heat water through a geothermal system. This will cool your home while allowing you to save a ton on hot water costs, plus it's environmentally friendly to boot!

In order to cheaply cool your home, turn the temperature up. If you take a few showers a day or just drink a cold ice water, you'll find that you're saving a lot of money on your utility bills by keeping the thermostat a little higher than usual in your home.

Check out how long the HVAV contractor you are considering has been in business. A company that has been in business for a long time will have a solid track record, and you can use this to figure out if you should spend your money with them. It is always risky to hire a contractor with little experience.

To run your HVAC at full efficiency, you must have efficient doors and windows in place as well. Each of these should have an airtight seal on them. Ask a contractor to test them for you.

Keep your condensers free of nearby obstructions. Keepplants and fencing, even bushes back and away from the unit. Two feet is a good minimum distance it should have from anything, including walls, but the more space you give it to breathe, the better it will work and the less likely it will be to fail.

The energy efficiency of a unit should be taken into consideration when purchasing a new cooling and heating system. Although you should be concerned about the price of a unit, the efficiency of the unit will save you thousands over the lifetime of the heating and cooling system and should weigh heavily on your buying decision.

Choose a good HVAC company. You need to find one that has a solid reputation. It's important that it has been around for several years and is backed by a good reputation in customer service. Find one that has trained professionals and qualified technicians to help with all kinds of customer needs. They should be able to handle any HVAC job no matter how simple or complex.

Try to get as many quotes from contractors that you can. By asking for many quotes, you can save tons of money. Ideally, five or six contractors should be called so you can get a good ball park figure of a reasonable rate.

When you hire a contractor to do a job, be sure to listen to what they tell you. For example, they can give you advice on how to keep your HVAC in working order. Ask about maintenance tips and how often you should be cleaning or servicing the unit.

Pick an HVAC business that understands the works and unit quickly to solve the problem. Good firms ensure they are always on schedule. Techs must be knowledgeable about diagnosing and repairing your system quickly. When they know what the problem is, they should know how to fix it quickly so that it works properly.

Any HVAC contractor you hire should have a 24-hour emergency hotline. They owe it to you to show up to fix anything, no matter how extreme the weather or what time of day it may be.

Look for deals on equipment. The equipment you need to update, maintain or repair your HVAC system tends to be expensive. Keep your eyes open for available coupons, store discounts and rebates on this equipment. Stock up on things you always need, like filters, when they are on sale.

HVAC isn't hard to work with once you know what it's all about. Hopefully this guide gave you the tips you need to get ahead with all of this. It's a great thing to work on carefully because it can save you money while paying off in other ways as well.

BOSTON U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton plans to make job creation the focus of her campaign over the next month, beginning with a $275 billion infrastructure spending plan that will be released this week.

Clinton's plan to increase the federal government's spending on infrastructure by $275 billion over the next five years will be fully paid for by changing how businesses are taxed, a campaign aide said, without providing any details.

Of the total amount, $25 billion will be earmarked for an infrastructure bank. Clinton's campaign estimates her proposals could also encourage private investment that, along with government spending, would inject a total of $500 billion into rebuilding crumbling roads, bridges, buildings and other structures.

"My jobs plan starts with investing in infrastructure," Clinton said on Sunday at the launch of "Hard Hats for Hillary" in Boston, "not just because infrastructure jobs are good-paying jobs, though they are, and not just because we desperately need to invest in building our future again, which we do, but because investing in infrastructure makes our economy more productive and competitive across the board."

The hard hats group is made up of union workers in skilled trades such as carpentry who support Clinton's campaign.

Clinton's campaign cited a recent study that showed the median wages for infrastructure workers, at $38,810 per year, were several thousand dollars higher than the national median for all workers.

Clinton's emphasis on jobs, and infrastructure in particular, is a move to woo working-class voters, who will be critical in the general election in November 2016.

Infrastructure spending is favored by Democrats to spur job growth. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is Clinton's chief rival for their party's nomination, has suggested a $1 trillion infrastructure plan. In President Barack Obama's 2016 budget, he proposed $478 billion for a six-year surface transportation proposal.

In Boston, Clinton noted the construction industry was hit hard during the financial recession and promised to rebuild "ladders of opportunity available to anybody who is willing to work hard" so workers can enter the middle class.

The officer, Lloyd Reed, confronted a man involved in the dispute late Saturday at a home in the Western Pennsylvania community of New Florence, said State Police Trooper Stephen Limani.

The man, Ray Allen Shetler Jr., shot Reed and is then believed to have fled the scene, Limani said.

Reed, who had more than 20 years' experience as a police officer, died of his wounds.

Shetler, described as a 31-year-old weighing about 220 pounds, was later brought into custody, Limani said. Before being transported to jail, the suspect was being treated for a bullet wound sustained during the initial confrontation.

Authorities had earlier warned residents in the area to lock the doors and windows of their homes and vehicles while Shetler was at large.

A woman at the home where the dispute took place suffered minor injuries that were believed to have been caused by Shetler, according to Limani.

A fugitive wanted in the kidnapping and torture of two women in suburban Portland nearly a quarter century ago was arrested at a hotel in Mexico, where he had been working and living under an assumed name.

Paul Erven Jackson, 45, was arrested Monday by Mexican immigration authorities in downtown Guadalajara, Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Wahlstrom said. He was flown to the United States overnight and booked into a Los Angeles jail on Tuesday.

Jackson was most recently featured on CNN's John Walsh's "The Hunt," and was profiled several times on "America's Most Wanted."

A tipster who watched "The Hunt" told authorities to look in Guadalajara and provided a possible name. Investigators used the information to find out where he was working.

"We always follow up with everything we get and this one turned out to be it, so we're very happy," Wahlstrom said.

Jackson appears to have been living in Mexico for several years under the name Paul Bennett Hamilton, Wahlstrom said.

Jackson denied his identity when contacted by Mexican authorities on his way to work in what Wahlstrom described as a job in the electronics field. He offered no further details on Jackson's job. The details of Jackson's personal life in Mexico also are unclear.

"Who's been helping him that's the next phase of this," Wahlstrom said. "Usually on these fugitive cases we start taking a hard look at who did what as far as assistance. How was he surviving?"

Police said Jackson and his older brother, Vance Roberts, kidnapped prostitutes and drove them to Roberts' home in Hillsboro, west of Portland. The brothers were arrested in 1990, but vanished early the following year after their mother bailed them out of jail.

Roberts surrendered in September 2006 and was convicted the following year of kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and sexual penetration with a foreign object. The 61-year-old is serving a 108-year prison sentence.

The first victim was 20 in September 1988 when she was kidnapped after agreeing to perform a $30 sex act on Roberts in his pickup, according to details from the older brother's trial. She said Roberts kept her in a locked closet when she wasn't chained to a bed. She was sexually abused for a week and forced to call him "Master X."

The second victim was pulled off the streets in June 1990, when she was 17. After a day as a sex slave, she escaped her handcuffs, jumped through a window and reported the men to police.
